Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat complications of portal hypertension, a condition where there is increased pressure in the portal vein. This procedure involves creating a shunt, or bypass, between the portal vein and the hepatic vein in order to reduce portal pressure and improve blood flow. TIPS is often used to manage conditions such as variceal bleeding, ascites, and hepatic hydrothorax in patients with liver cirrhosis or other liver diseases. It is considered an effective treatment option for those who do not respond to or are not good candidates for traditional therapies. TIPS can help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life for patients with portal hypertension.
